Johnny Mercer Joins Road Safety Campaigns Across Plymouth
Johnny Mercer, the MP for Plymouth Moor View, has joined the road safety campaigns held by Youth Parliaments across Plymouth this month. This includes visits to Marine Academy Primary and Tor Bridge Primary.
On Friday, 1st December, Mr Mercer met with Academy Parliament representatives at Marine Academy Primary to take part in a road safety campaign. The Plymouth MP held signs to raise awareness that turning right when leaving the school is dangerous and listened to the young campaigners’ ideas.
Nicola Keeler and Georgina Reid, Co-Headteachers at Marine Academy Primary, said:
“We are really grateful to Mr Mercer for taking the time to visit us and meet with representatives of our Academy Parliament. It was great for them to be able to share their concerns about road safety in person and for them to hear about how to affect change on issues they care about.”
Trust Moira Marder, CEO of the Ted Wragg Multi-Academy, said:
“It was brilliant to hear that Mr Mercer went along to Marine Academy Primary to meet with pupils. It’s so important for local Members of Parliament to hear from those in the community about what matters to them, and I am proud of our Academy Parliament pupils for articulating themselves to him so well.”
Also, on Friday, 15th December, Mr Mercer joined Tor Bridge Primary’s Pupil Parliament for their ‘Safer Journeys to School Campaign’ which they are running with the support of Plymouth City Council. The campaign has three aims: to encourage parents to avoid using Eden Valley Gardens, Ambleside Place and Ravenglass Close to drop-off and pick-up their children, and instead park on nearly streets and walk the rest of the journey; to encourage parents who do park on Eden Valley Gardens to park legally and considerately; and to encourage parents to consider leaving the car at home when possible and find other ways to travel.
Olivia Bartlett, Head of School at Tor Bridge Primary School, said:
“The Pupil Parliament were delighted to host Johnny Mercer MP on Friday 15th December for their Safer Journeys to School campaign. The pupils have been successfully monitoring the traffic at both the beginning and end of the school day and were proud to share this successful project with Johnny. The school community were incredibly grateful to Johnny for donning a hi-vis jacket and getting stuck in with the pupils at the end of the school day, thus raising the profile of this extremely vital campaign.”
Johnny Mercer concluded:
“Since entering Parliament, I have been very enthusiastic about getting young people actively involved in our politics, visiting schools in Plymouth and inviting them to Westminster every week. The road safety campaigns at Marine Academy and Tor Bridge are two exceptional examples of young people campaigning on issues of great importance to our City. Both campaigns have led to safer streets surrounding the schools. A huge thank you and well done to our Youth Parliamentarians for their hard work.”
