Johnny Mercer Takes Centrestage at Party Conference

Johnny Mercer took centrestage at the Conservative Party Conference on Wednesday, 4th October, delivering a punchy speech on veterans’ affairs before introducing the Prime Minister. The speech is just one of many ways that Mr Mercer has been able to help put Plymouth on the map as the Veterans Minister.

Returning to the city every week to fulfill his constituency duties, Plymouth is a key point of reference for Johnny Mercer. While he was quick to exclaim “I love Plymouth”, Mr Mercer also offered some honest reflections in his speech on the hardships currently facing the city and country at large. Mr Mercer commented that “life is really difficult out there at the moment, really tough in cities like mine”. He added that while the Government has done a lot to support people, “for too many people, it doesn’t feel like that. And we haven’t got it always right. And we all know that.” Whether it is fixing how we manage the Tamar Bridge or advocating for every under-16 in Plymouth to have access to an NHS dentist, the Plymouth Moor View MP is determined to apply the Prime Minister’s conference slogan to Plymouth and deliver “long term solutions for a brighter future”.

On veterans, the focus of his speech, Johnny Mercer is driven to make Plymouth “the best city in the UK to be a veteran”. With 18,279 veterans reported living in the city by the 2021 census, Plymouth is well placed to lead in veterans care. There are many fantastic initiatives throughout the city which Mr Mercer is directly involved with. On Tuesday, 26th September, the Plymouth Moor View MP visited Building Heros, a charity which provides skills training to veterans and support into employment in the building trades. It is his ambition to promote Plymouth as the gold standard by which other towns and cities across the country should follow.

Reflecting on the well-received speech in his regular newsletter to constituents, Mr Mercer reasoned, “Politics needs to be done differently – I’ve been saying that for ages. I feel like this week was a turning point – for the Conservative Party, and my relationship with my Party which hasn’t always been easy. I’m excited for the first time in a long time.”
